And The Rest...FROM THE EDITORJanuary is the meanest month. It’s a cold, cruel snap in the year that should be nurtured by long, lazy lie-ins and box sets devoured under duvets with a packet of chocolate Hobnobs. Instead, we punish ourselves. We diet until we feel vaguely faint, we exercise until our limbs hurt and drink juices that appear to do little except make our gag reflex work overtime.I know this because for many years, I was one of those women. Perhaps you’re one of those women right now. You are? OK

KnowWhat is the ‘body beautiful’ anyway?“Excuse me, are you a model? Would you like to have dinner with me? I’m a plastic surgeon – I could do your nose for free and, if you like, I could laser off those saddle bags
” the man in the supermarket said, playfully tapping my thigh. This is the delightful way a guy approached me in Los Angeles this week. Unbelievably, he seemed fairly confident I’d grant him a date. Even more unbelievably, this isn’t an unusual way to converse in this city. They dole out constant ‘constructive’ criticism, which is digested and sometimes even welcomed due to the strong undercurrent of insecurity. This surgeon seemed surprised I wasn’t gagging to find a scalpel-wielding Prince Charming to fulfil my ambition of being a fat-free clone of every other woman in town. The
