TSSAA boys basketball tournament 2022: Milan advancing to first title game since 1942 (2024)

Milan cruises to first state title game since 1942

The Bulldogs handily defeated Tyner 59-41to advance to their first state title game in 80 years.

Milan (25-7) was 7of 11on three pointers and outscored Tyner 47-30over the last three quarters

Jodarius Robinson had 14points to lead all scorers to go along with eightrebounds and fiveassists.

Keelan Jackson had a team-high nine points for Tyner (24-11).

Milan up 21entering the fourthquarter

The Bulldogs outscored Tyner 15-3in the third quarter after outscoring them 13-5 in the second quarter.

Jodarius Robinson has a game-high 12 points.

Milan hasn't made the state championship game since 1942.

Milan leads by 9 at the half

The Bulldogs lead Chattanooga Tyner 25-16 at halftime.

The Bulldogs (24-7) have made 10 of 19 from the field including 4 of 7 from beyond the arc.

Jodarius Robinson, the star of Milan's double overtime win over York Institute, has a team-high seven points.

Rodney Henderson of Tyner (24-10)also has a team-high of seven points.

East Nashville holds on to beat Power Center

Led by Jarrod Taylor's 19points, the Eagles hold on to beat Power Center 64-53 on Wednesday at Murphy Center and advance to the Class 2A state championship game.

The Eagles pulled away thanks to an 11-0 run late in the fourth quarter. The Knights responded to East Nashville's zone, capitalizing on its perimeter shooting.

Along with Taylor's 19points and nine rebounds, Jordan Crawford added 13. Jaylen Jones finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Cordarius Sledge led all Power Center scorers with 21 points. PJ Hillman added 14 points and nine rebounds.

East Nashville starting to pull away

The Eagles are starting to pull away from Power Center. They are amidst an 11-0 the last 2:28 and hold a 57-49 lead over Power Center with less than two minutes left in the game.

Power Center retakes the lead after three quarters

The Knights learned from Tuesday's game and have attacked the zone much better. It's helped them retake the lead over East Nashville. They lead 39-38.

Power Center was 2-for-5 in the quarter from beyond the arc and their improved efficiency has helped them stay in this one.

East Nashville leads by three at half

Caleb Jackson and PJ Hillman lead all scorers but the Eagles are leading by 3 at halftime, 28-25.

The difference through 16 minutes is Power Center's foul trouble. East Nashville shot 11 free throws (made eight of them) in the first half. Power Center has shot five so far. East Nashville has the rebound advantage 24-20.

Cullen Cleaves and Jordan Crawford lead all Eagles scorers with six points each. Jaylen Jones has all four of his point from the free throw line and Jarrod Taylor has five points through the first half.

Power Center, East Nashville tied after first quarter

Power Center's, Cordarius Sledge leads all scorers with six points as the Knights and Eagles are tied at 11 after the first quarter.

Cullen Cleaves leads East Nashville scorers with four points.

So far, not much is separating the two teams in the Class 2A semifinals game.

Peabody cruises to win over McKenzie

Peabody cruised to a 63-48 win over McKenzie to advance to the Class 1A semifinals where they will face Clay County, the reigning 1A champion.

The Kee brothers each scored double-digit points for Peabody. Demarkus led with 21 points, and Derek had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Derek also five steals and three blocks.

Peabody shot 50.9% from the field and 33% from three. McKenzie's shooting struggles were the deciding factor, as they finished shooting 27.9% from the field and 11.8% from three. The Rebels were led by Marquez Taylor with 18 points.

Peabody (23-9) has an eight-point lead at halftime in part due to senior guard Demarkus Kee, who has a game-high 13 point on 5 of 10 shooting.

Marquez Taylor has a team-high nine points for McKenzie (21-8).

Peabody outscored McKenzie 13-7 in the second quarter and has committed six turnovers compared to McKenzie's 11.

Clay County dominates North Greene behind two 20+ pointperformances

Mr. Basketball winner Grant Strong led Clay County with 25 points and six rebounds in a 70-42 win over North Greene in the 1A quarterfinals, but Jeffery Spivey was right on his tail with 21 and five rebounds. Both shot 100% from the free throw line on nine attempts.

The Bulldogs were 26-28 from the free throw line as a team, also shooting 45.5% from the field and 44.4% from beyond the arc. Junior center Keaton Arms recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Cody Freshour led North Greene with 14 points.

Clay County will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Peabody and McKenzie in the semifinal when they attempt to reach a second consecutive state championship game.

Grant Strong explodes, Clay County leads North Greene 31-16 at half

After a slow first quarter, Grant Strong did what Grant Strong does in the second. The 1A Mr. Basketball winner entered halftime with 16points, four rebounds and two assists. He is 4-10from the field, 2-3 from three and 6-6 from the free throw line.

Clay County leads North Greene in nearly every statistical category, shooting 43.5% from the field to the Huskies' 33.3% and 60% from three to their 25%. The Bulldogs are also out-rebounding North Greene 18-9.

North Greene holds Mr. Basketball winner to one basketin first quarter vs. Clay County

It's rare to see Clay County star Grant Strong with a zero next to his name in the state sheet, but North Greene pulled it off for most of the first quarter of the Class 1A quarterfinal.

Strong nailed a three-pointer with under a minute remaining, but for most of the quarter senior Jeffery Spivey was the only one to put points on the board from the field for Clay County. He finished with seven points, and the Bulldogs led 13-6 at the buzzer.

East Robertson upset MAHS 50-49 in a TSSAA Class 1A boys basketball state quarterfinal for the program's first state tournament win since 1993.

Sophom*ore Elijah Groves hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds before MAHS drove the length of the court and had one last desperation 3-point attempt, that landed behind the backboard as the horn went off.

Ole Miss football signee Taylor Groves finished with 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting and had seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Elijah had 11 points and Shaun Groves added six.

Geoffrey Shaw led MAHS with 12 points. Freddrick Carter added 10.

East Robertson (25-6) plays Hampton (27-8) at 4:30 p.m. Friday in a 1A semifinal.

The Groves family has made its mark in Murfreesboro. Taylor Groves (24), Elijah Groves (8) and Shaun Groves (4) have scored all of East Robertson's points through three quarters and it leads MAHS entering the final eight minutes.

Jordan Barnard is the only non-Groves family member that has taken a shot for East Robertson during Thursday's game.

Payton and Carter are leading MAHS with eight points apiece.

MAHS holds three-point lead at half

The Lions put together a 7-0 run at the end of the second quarter to build a 24-21 lead over East Robertson at halftime.

DeShaun Payton leads all MAHS scorers with eight points. Taylor Groves leads all scorers with 15 points. The Lions are daring Groves to beat them and so far its working. If MAHS doesn't allow any other East Robertson player to get hot in the second half, they might be able to hold on.

Elijah Groves is the only other scorer for East Robertson with six points and MAHS has six players that have scored.

MAHS leads after first quarter

MAHS and East Robertson are keeping it close through the first eight minutes. The Lions hold an 11-10 lead, led by Freddrick Carter, who has six points so far. The Lions are shooting both 40 percent from the field and from beyond the 3-point arc.

Taylor Groves leads East Robertson scorers with six points as well.

Hampton withstands West Carroll rally

Hampton was leading West Carroll38-23 early in the third quarterbefore West Carroll was able to tie it a couple times. They forced a couple turnovers down the stretch and pulled away they were able to pull away in the final seconds with free throws to win 60-56.

Morgan Lyons was Hampton's leading scorer with 17 points.

Jalen Anglin led all scorers with 30 points.

Hampton leads West Carroll at halftime thanks to big second quarter

Hampton turned a five-point deficit into a 36-23 lead over West Carroll after a dominating second quarter.

Hampton outscored West Carroll 21-3 in the second quarter. Morgan Lyons and Hayden Campbell has eight points apiece to lead the Bulldogs.

Jalen Anglin leads all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
